Take control of your photography and get your pictures to look the way you saw / imagined them!

On this 5 hour workshop Ian will use plain language and plenty of practical help to ‘Get Off Auto’

  • You will learn how to use your camera’s controls to select Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO manually to get the correct exposure every time.

  • You will learn about ‘Depth of Field’ and how to use your camera’s focussing system to get clear sharp images of landscapes and static subjects.
    (focussing on moving subjects is covered on part 2)

  • We will also cover some basic rules of composition for landscape, still life and portrait photographs.

(Get Off Auto)

  • Complete Beginners to Photography

    Novice / Smartphone Photographers with a new camera

    ‘Auto’ Photographers wanting to learn about other settings to have more control over their images

    35mm Film Camera Users wanting to refresh their knowledge / switch to a digital camera

  • This is a 5 hour workshop

    Starting at 10:00 am

    Finishing at 15:30 pm

    (30 mins lunch - either in the on-site cafe, or bring your own)

Understand Your Camera - Part 2
(Capture The Action)

Showing and Freezing Movement

Capture shots of moving subjects that show the excitement and speed of the action or the movement of wind and water!

On this 5 hour workshop Ian will use plain language and plenty of practical to help you ‘Capture the Action’

  • You will learn how to select a suitable shutter speed to freeze movement for different subjects in action.
    (e.g. Children playing, pets, sports, birds in flight, etc)

  • You will learn how to show speed by ‘panning’ to get a sharp subject against a blurred background

  • You will learn how to use longer exposures to smooth out moving water

  • If time allows we will also try some creative techniques using longer shutter speeds. (e.g. ICM and ‘Ghosts’)

  • People who have completed Understand Your Camera - Part 1 (or an equivalent workshop elsewhere)

    ‘Auto’ Photographers wanting to learn about other settings to have more control over their action shots

    35mm Film Camera Users wanting to refresh their knowledge / switch to a digital camera

  • This is a 5 hour workshop

Introduction to Astro-Photography
(The Sky at Night)

Stars, The Moon and Auroras

Capture amazing images of the night sky that show things the human eye cannot clearly see!

On this 3 hour workshop Ian will use plain language and plenty of practical help to get you ‘Off Auto’

  • You will learn how to set your camera’s controls to take longer and/or time-lapse photos in darkness

  • You will learn how to use manual focus to ensure your subject is sharp.

  • You will also learn about ‘Depth of Field’ and how to get a foreground subject, as well as the stars, sharp in a single exposure.

  • We will also learn how to shoot ‘Star Trails’ and auroras (the ‘Northern Lights’)

  • Any photographer with a camera that has manual exposure settings and controls

    Smartphone users with Night Photography settings may find this useful and interesting, but we will not have time to cover specific settings of different phones.

  • This is a 3 hour workshop

    Starting at 18:00 am

    Finishing at 21:00 pm

    Hot drinks will be available throughout
